Inspired by the customs and entertainments of the Georgian period and the history of Chiswick House itself, Liberata Collective’s new festive production invites audiences to a Christmas party hosted by former owner, Duchess Georgiana of Devonshire. In a play within a play, the Duchess and her friends tell their own version of the Christmas story, woven together with traditional dances, lively instrumental music, festive jollity and beautiful singing.
The result is a theatrical celebration of Christmas in the sound world and aesthetic of Georgian England; the kind of evening that might have delighted the likes of Handel or Queen Charlotte.
The programme includes music by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau and Purcell, alongside much-loved festive music including favourites from Handel’s Messiah, all brought to life through the historical acting methods and research for which the company has become known.
